The farmers' adoption of adaptation strategy depended on their perception of climate change and the available coping strategy.

The main coping strategies implemented by the farmers were shifting of planting dates and timing of cultural activities, adopting new crop varieties, ploughing before planting, diversifying crops and making specific sacrifices to divine powers depending on the type of belief of the farmer. Respondents reported an increase in temperature and decrease in rainfall amount in Korhogo and Boundiali departments, which were consistent with the climate data. Using changes in weather pattern as indicators of climate change, the results showed that majority of respondents believe climate change is evident in the study area and has negative effects on their livelihoods. A survey was conducted among 355 smallholder farmers distributed in four departments of the cotton basin of Côte d'Ivoire (Korhogo, Boundiali, Ferkessédougou and Mankono). Les superficies des forêts galeries (4,79%) et les savanes arborées et arbustives (16,01%) en 1998 ont régressé pour occuper respectivement 1,39% et 5,80% en 2018. Les forêts denses, les forêts claires et les savanes boisées qui ont occupé 6,21% et 18,33% de la superficie en 1998, sont progressivement réduites à 1,06% et 0,28% en 2018. Le modèle CA_MARKOV sous IDRISI a été utilisé pour modéliser la dynamique spatio-temporelle en 2035 et 2050.

Dans ce cadre, les images Landsat ETM de 1998, Landsat OLI 8 de 2008 et de 2018 ont été utilisées pour cartographier les unités d'occupation du sol de la BMVO avec le logiciel QGis. The annual change in rainfall over the period 1971-2010 shows an upward trend marked by 48% of deficit, 3% of average and 49% of surplus years. The results reveal unimodal rainfall with a rainy season (May to October) and a dry season (November to April). This analysis is based on climate data (rainfall and temperature) for the period 1971-2010 and statistics of area and yield of cotton production on the period 1995-2010.The various treatments of quantitative data were reinforced by socio-anthropological qualitative data from fieldwork.
